United States: The U.S. Justice Department is now investigating Democrat Andrew Cuomo, who is seeking to be New York City mayor, over Republican claims that he lied about his role as New York governor during the pandemic, as was alleged before Congress, as reported by Reuters.
Political Motives Under Scrutiny
The probe offers more evidence to those who say the Justice Department is moving against President Donald Trump’s opponents. Trump has said before that legal cases brought against him were politically motivated, yet he has also suggested investigating his political rivals.
Multiple sources close to the situation say the investigation into Cuomo was first mentioned by the New York Times. Officials at the Justice Department did not respond to queries when asked to comment.
Rich Azzopardi, a spokesperson for Cuomo, said his office found out about the probe after it was made public. He noted that Trump and the Justice Department are guilty of “clearly using lawfare and interfering with the election which President Trump and his top Department of Justice staff members claim to oppose.”

Cuomo’s Past and the Mayoral Race
Cuomo stepped down as governor in August 2021 after New York Attorney General Letitia James released a report on his sexual misconduct. The 67-year-old Cuomo said he did not do these things.
Many say Eric Adams has the best chance of winning the Democratic primary for New York City mayor on June 24. The victor will compete for mayor against President Eric Adams, a Democrat running this year as an independent candidate. Previously, a federal investigation alleged Adams committed bribery and fraud, though it dropped the charges because he agreed with Trump’s policies on immigration, as reported by Reuters.
Calls for Prosecution Grow
A Republican House subcommittee reported last year that it felt Cuomo’s closed-door testimony merited being considered for prosecution by the Justice Department, according to the Times.
