United States: U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson declared on Monday that Republican representatives will keep pushing towards voting for President Donald Trump’s tax bill during the upcoming May 26 Memorial Day weekend despite no reported setbacks in the bill’s process, as reported by Reuters.
Push Continues Amid Tight Timeline
“Everybody remains in close coordination on the urgency of the hour, and we’re trying to get it done. If it’s not done before Memorial Day, it will be shortly thereafter. But our timetable is on pace,” Johnson told reporters at the U.S. Capitol.
No Legislative Setbacks Reported
Rep Scalise expressed the timeframe as “very ambitious” when he explained that House Republicans faced no obstacles from committee postponements needed to progress bill sections. Many Republican legislators disagree on reducing funding for safety net programs that offer healthcare benefits through Medicaid to Americans with low incomes.

Caution Over Speed
“It’s not a setback at all. In fact, I think it’s very productive,” Johnson said. “We would rather take another week and do it exactly right than rush it and have to adjust things later.”
The president needed to leave an important White House meeting abruptly because of other activities that stopped them from making choices about aspects of the bill, according to Johnson, as reported by Reuters.
